We run a number of different projects centred around people affected by social exclusion including young people not in education, employment or training, disabled people, people with mental illness, homeless people, the elderly, people from ethnic minorities and unemployed people. Some of our projects are UK based, some are with partners from countries in the European Union and a number of our projects have been with organisations outside of the EU, in developing countries. Our vision The focus of our activities is to work with people experiencing social exclusion; to provide innovative actions and developments that offer opportunities for economic and social integration. The Toucan Group is working towards social and economic integration in the Europe of 25. Toucan Europe Toucan is a non-profit co-operative working in the area of research and development, providing technical assistance, management and training and development for organisations within the UK, the European Union and in the developing world. The focus of activities is work with people experiencing social exclusion, and innovative actions and developments that offer opportunities for economic and social integration. Toucan was established in Manchester in 1994, by two people, Jean Hough and Dave Ellis, who had come from a background of work in the voluntary sector at a regional and national level, as well as work in higher education. Toucan is registered as a non-profit limited company with educational purposes for the benefit of the community; specifically because much of our work has been with disadvantaged groups and individuals in society. Toucan furthers this work by working in partnership with the voluntary, statutory and private sectors. We work closely with education, social and health care services, and voluntary organisations at a national and international level, as well as managing regional, national and European projects aimed at promoting the participation and integration of socially excluded people within society. Toucan Trust Toucan Trust is the charitable arm of Toucan Group. The Trust was established in November 1998 with the objective of: "The relief of persons in conditions of need, hardship and distress, in particular the young, the elderly and the disabled, by providing or assisting in the provision of education, advice, training and support." The Trust seeks to continue the work that was established by Jean Hough and Dave Ellis in the early 1990’s, following the death of Jean Hough in 1997, it was decided to establish a charitable trust to continue the work that Jean had been interested in for a number of years. Toucan Trust will endeavour to work in partnership and consortia to further the needs and aspirations of those individuals and groups experiencing social exclusion.
